South head walk
December 30, 2006
by Christine

On the second last day of 2006, Hannes and I head out along the coastal walk running along the rim of the South head.

First stop is the Macquarie Lighthouse, Australia's first and longest operating navigational light. There has been a navigational aid on this site since 1791 and a lighthouse since 1818.

The North and South head marks the entrance to Sydney harbour. The cliffs are dead vertical, creating a spectacular coastline.

Hannes enjoying the view of the vast ocean outside the heads.

The trail leads us to ...

... a lookout, where you have the city on one side, and the vast ocean on the other.

Arriving in Watsons bay.

Walking past a few houses, some with Christmas decorations still in their front yard. It just does not feel like Christmas when it's 25C and you're having ice cream outside!

Stopping for some rest in the sun at Camp Cove.

Here and there along the rim of the South head, there are old artillery stations and - like here - an old cannon still standing.

Walking past another lighthouse. The cluster of houses in the background is Manly, on the north shore.

The man and the sea.

Heading back into the harbour from Camp Cove, we find a nice spot among the rocks where we decide to take a plunge.

Hannes thinks it is bit cold though .... ("only" 21 degrees)

But eventually we dive in there, it's great after a day of walking!

On our way back, we stop at "the Gap", a cove on the outside of the South head, where the sea never stops pounding the vertical cliff face.
